1. You will have the resources of the Miami Main
Street Program behind you for design assistance.
2. Windows that are boarded up are a fire hazard.
Many valuable buildings have been lost in Oklahoma
because firefighters could not enter the upper
stories of board up buildings. "We were having
trouble getting the plywood off of the windows. That
hindered us for a while," Major Danny Kilmer of the
OKC Fire Department said, "WE had to use
powerful water streams to blow the windows off." (A
$275,000 OKC downtown building was lost.)
3. Canvas awnings and uncovered windows give
life and color to the downtown and subtlety says,
"We care about our town and are open for
business." Studies have shown that boarded up
upper story windows send a subconscious message
that the town is closed.
